The basics of puppy training: Setting your companion up for success

When you first bring your new puppy home you become not only a new pet owner but also a dog trainer. Everything that you do with your puppy is a form of training. A few things we want to show the puppy when we first bring them home are.

  • The yard or space they go to potty

  • The area they are allowed to walk around in / Crate

  • The locating of the food and water

When it comes to actually training a dog we always want to begin with the ending in mind. What kind of dog do you want to live with? Once you answer this question you can determine what the best dog training method for your dog is.

The first exercise we teach all puppies are their markers. A marker is our base line of communication. This is how we tell the dog when they did something right and when they did something wrong. This is also known as beginner training for dogs.

First we start with our reward marker. We want to condition a word or sound that directly correlates to the production of a reward for the dog for an example. The puppy gives me some kind of engagement or looks at me. I say "Yes" meaning that's what I wanted you to do then I give the puppy a treat to teach it that the action of looking at me is what makes the treat come out. You know that you reward marker is charged when the puppy is minding its own business and you say "Yes" and the puppy stops what its doing and runs to you looking for that treat you know your on the right track to achieving a well trained puppy.
